Quan Zhou Fu Zhi (Chorography of Quanzhou Prefecture) by Huai Yinbu (Qing Dynasty)

According to Quan Zhou Fu Zhi of the Qianlong period in the Qing Dynasty (AD 1636-1912), deputy governor of Guangdong started an inspection of the South China Sea from the current Haikou. Wu Sheng, a native of Tong'an and styled "Yuanze", was originally from the Huang Clan. He was promoted to the rank of Qianzong (thousand-household chief) for meritorious service in fighting pirates in Guotang in his capacity as Zongqi (junior officer). Later he was recognized for his merits in military service in Jinmen, Xiamen, Penghu and Taiwan, and was successively conferred the title of Shaanxi Youji, promoted to deputy governor of Guangdong and transferred to Qiongzhou. During the inspection, he restored peace when he passed Qiongya, Tonggu, Qizhouyang and Sigengsha, covering a trip of 3,000 li. After the inspection, he was appointed military commander of Dinghai." From the trip of 3,000 li, it can be known that the patrolled range back then was extended to the waters of Xisha Qundao at least.
